How St. Augustine Became Our Place
When Matthew and Malena first started dating, one of the first things Matthew wanted to do was bring her here.
Not to a restaurant he liked or a place he had been once. Here. To St. Augustine. To the town he had been carrying with him since childhood. The one that had never let him go.
His father had a house here at the time. They stayed there. He took her on the trolley, walked her through the history, the beach, the Fountain of Youth, the local spots that make this place unlike anywhere else in the country. They met the people who had built their lives in this community and felt what St. Augustine actually feels like from the inside.
By the end of that trip, Malena loved it the way Matthew did.
Not because he sold her on it. Because she felt it herself.
There's something about this town that gets into you. And once it does, it doesn't let go.
They kept coming back. Every chance they got. Weekends when that was all they had. Midweek trips if they could manage it. A full week when they were lucky. Matthew's father kept his house here, and St. Augustine stayed their place, the one they returned to every time they needed to remember what they were working toward.
